Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone, but Doug and I ran away today. Doug really wanted to go home last Friday and the thought of being in the hospital another week seemed almost too much for him. Doug has not been home for 5 months, other than those few days in December. He is longing for home and his life back. I decided I needed to do some things for him to help his week go faster. Weekends in the hospital are very long because he gets limited therapies. He had two hours of therapy yesterday and no therapies today. And so Friday night I brought in Chinese food and we watched our favorite programs on TV. On Saturday our friends Harry and Cory came for lunch and we took a long stroll outside and sat outside enjoying the spring sunshine. Today I brought Doug a milkshake. Fr. Dave came and brought us communion.
But here is the secret. We did not just go for a walk, we walked/rolled to Whole Foods. We went up to the bar, shared a beer and a snack plate and listened to some music. This is the first time Doug has been out since we flew home on December 3 from Mexico. He drove his electric wheelchair down and back. He did not have any difficulty with endurance. He loved being out and around other people. He loved looking at the buildings, the flowers and the buds on the trees. It felt like new life. It was good for both us. It was good to have a taste of a normal life and to envision the opportunity of moving forward, and getting back to our life. We told the hospital we were going for a walk, but Doug really needed an outing. It was well worth sneaking away for a couple of hours.
God that delights, thank you for the pleasure of long walks on spring days, beautiful flowers and the smell of blossoming trees. Thank you for music that relaxes, foods that refresh and the company of others. Be with us the next few days as we continue our preparations for Doug to come home. Give us courage to overcome all the challenges of coming home and fill our hearts with joy and celebration, with all that has been accomplished these past few months. Amen
